Media release

17 Dec 2013

The Osteopathy Board has published a media release regarding the competent authority pathway, which will commence from 1 January 2014.

Competent authority pathway commences 1 January 2014

The Osteopathy Board of Australia’s competent authority pathway will commence from 1 January 2014.

The new competent authority pathway is an additional route to the existing current standard pathway for overseas practitioners to obtain general registration in Australia and was announced earlier this year. The pathway applies to some osteopaths who qualified in the United Kingdom after 2000 and are considered as having the clinical skills and knowledge for practice in Australia.

From 1 January 2014, an osteopath who qualified in the United Kingdom after 2000 may apply to the Australian and New Zealand Osteopathic Council (ANZOC) for a desk-top assessment of their qualifications.

If they pass the desk-top assessment, the osteopath must then complete an assessment by ANZOC based on Information on the practice of osteopathy in Australia: A guide for graduates trained overseas.

Once the ANZOC assessments have been successfully completed, the osteopath must then apply to the Osteopathy Board of Australia for provisional registration and complete six months’ supervised practice in Australia to become eligible for general registration (see the Framework: Pathways for registration of overseas-trained osteopaths on the Board’s website.)

For further information on supervised practice, please refer to the fact sheet: Supervision in the competent authority pathway under the fact sheet tab. Information on the new forms and fees is also available on the Board’s website. Applications to the Board for provisional registration can commence in 2014.
